Evaluation of film day 1

On our first film day we went out to Kings Cross station to film our first set of scenes with the time that we had. This is our main location for the title sequence, therefore it was important that we got all the scenes that we needed. To insure that we could have back up scenes we filmed each scene 3 times, as some turned out better than others so it was smart to do this. Kings cross was challenge because the area is always filled with security, however it didn't pose as too much of a problem as we explained that we emailed before hand to ask for the permission to film at the site. Overall, the first film day was a success, we gathered a lot of scenes that were useful to us in our title sequence. We all worked great as a team, the communication between us was very good. We all contributed extra ideas and opinions that improved the quality of our shots.

Evaluation of filming day 1 (30th Nov)

On the first day of filming we filmed at Kings Cross which is our main location. We filmed a establishing shots and other shots mentioned in the storyboard. Before we went to film, we planned out and decided to film those shots. Therefore we will continue to work in this way as it will also us to be clear and have a focussed idea of what we need to do on the days we are filming. Additionally by planning what shots need to be filmed, we won't be confused and won't have any trouble.
We intend to film next on Monday the 5th.

Evaluation of pitch feedback

Doing pitches was successful as we were able to gain new ideas and learn from other groups about different shots or how to plan our better.

Our pitch was a success as people liked our plot idea and how it went well with the thriller genre. We were able to make our pitch visually appealing as well as professional which most people liked. It was also successful as it was very detailed and mostly clear about our ideas for example our audience profiling was very detailed. Our storyboard had a lot of information e.g. shot types, what each shot is trying to show and which title credits will be shown in each shot.

From pitching our ideas, we were able to gain new ways to improve our film to make it better. For example, being clear in our sequence and focussing on the main character instead of having so many flashbacks. This is because it will reveal too much in just the title sequence so we will improve it to maintain the tension and suspense by building it up gradually. Another way to improve our ideas is by having a soundscape to be clear on the sounds that will be used. In our pitch, we need to expand on how our film goes against stereotypes which it does as our main character is a female whereas typically in thriller films, the main character is a male. We also need to edit our production schedule as there are some days we have changed and also edit our risk assessment.

PITCH FEEDBACK

Evaluation Of Pitch Feedback

All the feedback we received from the class, (which was our audience) was very positive. There were some areas within the pitch that could've been improved.

  1. It was said that they all could clearly identify the direction in which our film title sequence idea was going. This was because we were confident in explaining our idea as our voices were loud and clear.
  2. The whole class engaged whilst we were presenting our presentation because we explained all the information in full detail.
  3. We were told from members of the class that our idea was unique and challenged many gender stereotypes, which we were pleased to have been noticed.
  4. It was said that one area we needed to develop was the risk assessment because some risks that weren't mentioned. Such as,
  5. It was said that our storyboard covered all aspects of our title sequence idea, and that there was lots of detail on the different types of shot we are going to include which as useful in helping them imagine the outcome of our film.
  6. Also, another improvement we could've made was input the different types of sounds we are planning to use onto the pitch powerpoint to play for the audience. The soundscape would help the audience better understand the non-diegetic/diegetic sounds we said we are going to include.
  7. Another development that was mentioned was on our idea of including a flashback in our opening title sequence. Originally, we planned to include a flashback as we thought it would make the title sequence even more interesting and make it even more direct to the audience the plot of the film. It was said that the flashback wasn't necessary and would complicate the filming process. So in addition to this compliment we scraped the idea and replaced the scenes with extra scenes, (like extra establishing songs) to stretch out the story it could reach the 2 minute mark.

Overall, I think the feedback we received was good and that our pitch was a success. We were very organised and elaborate on our ideas for our film title sequence, in which we gave extra detail to our audience.

Pitch Task 12 - Production Schedule (Diana)

Production Schedule

https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/1402676

Together as a group we came up with a schedule that works for everyone. All the times and dates are suitable for everybody.  This plan is beneficial as it will keep us all aware & on the same page, as to when we will be filming each scenes and at which locations.

Pitch task 4 - representation (Azania)

Pitch task 13 - risk assessment (Azania)

Pitch task 11 - Storyboard

Pitch task 9 - Sound design (YASMIN)

Pitch task 3 - Genre (DIANA)

Genre

The genre of the film is thriller. We have chosen this genre because this genre fits really well with our plot. Thriller is a popular genre and the conventions are easy to follow. These include quick cuts, tense music, protagonist vs antagonist etc. We also chose this genre because we wanted our film to be full of suspense, as we feel this would effectively capture the audience's attention.

Thriller title sequences we have been inspired by:

Se7en

This is because already we are given a lot of key detail. This keeps the audience guessing the reason behind all of the objects that are shown in the title sequence. We have been inspired by this and will incorporate this feature into our own title sequence.

Our Locations

We choose to film at Kings Cross. This is because it is a well known place in London which is needed for our film. Also it is local to us so it will be easy for us to travel there and film. Inside, Kings Cross has a large amount of space which is also useful when filming. In addition to this we will need pedestrians in the background of shoots and we will have a variety of different people as Kings Cross is usually packed with large groups of people.

We will also be filming on the bus to show the character's journey and a phone box. The phone box is a key place which we need to film because it is essential to the main plot, which will be uncovered later on.

Setting

Our movie is set in a modern time (today). This is because we need modern technology as it is important to the plot.

purpose and common features of title sequences

The purpose of every title sequence is to give credit to all the people who helped with the film. Title sequences are also used to let you know the genre of the film and the tone and atmosphere. Using these three things you can keep the viewer interested in watching the rest of the film. The title sequence is usually used to introduce main characters.

The common features that title sequences are supposed to have are the title of the film, the logo of the production company, to introduce where and when the film is set. Other features title sequences have are sounds or writing to give additional information, non-diegetic sounds such as soundtracks or sound effects. Diegetic sounds can also be used to set atmosphere and tone and introduce characters such as characters speaking to introduce themselves to the audience

An example of a good title sequence:

Lara's blog from set 1 group 3

I think Lara's blog is a good blog because all of her posts are different. All of her posts are informative, with lots of blogs about planning and research. She also uses a large range of websites to create her blogs such as Prezi, Vimeo and Emaze which makes it easier and more interesting for readers to understand her blog. Lara also used colour schemes to help identify what her blogs are about such as black and red for a blog about a horror title sequences. Using colours makes reading the blogs more interesting. Another reason for Lara's blog being good is that she explains in great detail all of the processes of her work (planning and film) different medias such as presentations, screenshots, written descriptions, videos and rough cuts.

Why is sound important?

Sound is important in film because it creates realism, atmosphere and tone. It helps give clues about the plot (with music and other suggestive sounds) and helps you understand characters and their intensions. Sound also makes the film more engaging and helps captivate the audience. It can also help to identify the genre. If we didn't have sound in films it would be harder to understand what is going on in the film also it would make the film a lot less interesting.

TASK 33: Distribution ident

We created a logo for our distribution company as a group using 'onlinelogomaker.com'. On this site, we decided to name is "Univu Pictures" as it is unique and different. We chose the colours grey and blue as they went well together however we will change the colour of the font so that it can be seen more clearly and stands out. We then used After Effects to use a template to make the ident to animate it and add effects. We used the 'shattering' effect as we thought it was the most effective.

TASK 22: Remake activity evaluation

One of the most difficult aspect of the remake was trying to note down every shot used in the actual title sequence of The Breakfast Club. Not only was it quite long, it also has a title credits on a blank screen so 2 minutes or so were just done during editing. We were not able to do all shots but tried to do as much as we could. However as the scenes in the opening is set in a school, it was easy for us to replicate many of the scenes and make it similar to the actual title sequence.

After filming, we went to edit and put all the shots together. We used softwares such as Premiere Pro, to put our shots together and cut off what wasn't necessary, as well as After Effects for special effects. We tried to find a similar font to the one used in The Breakfast Club, as it was quite bold and stood out. We also used a similar yellow colour which made it stand out.

Overall, I feel that the piece turned out good as it was similar and resembled the original. We had many of the shots used in the original title sequence and tried to have them at a similar timing. However to improve, if we were able to do it again, we would try to get all the scenes shot and improve our editing skills. This would have been able to be done if we managed our time properly which is another thing we must improve so that our title sequence would come out as professional as possible.

Blog task 23 - Blogging Health Check 1 Feedback

I need to put in a large amount of time into my work to assure that it is done properly and of a high quality.  Overall, i understand that i am putting a very basic amount of detail into my work and that it is the main area i need to work on. Therefore, to improve and boost my grade upwards i must return to my previous work and expand on my points. Also, i must catch up on all the blog task that need to be complete so that the full amount can be fully assessed.

blogging health check 1 - feedback and targets

i think i am doing fairly well but i do need to read over my work and make sure i fully explain my points.  furthermore, i need to work on all the incomplete task and complete the the blog tasks that are half done. also i should use more ICT apps to present my ideas and rearrange my  blog post so they are in chronologically  order.

Blogging Health Check 1 - feedback and targets

So far I think I am doing okay. I have completed most of the tasks, some in detail and some using different ICT apps such as emaze and prezi.

To improve I need to catch up and complete the rest of the tasks. I will also improve tasks I have already done so they are more detailed and of a higher standard like some of my other posts. I will also try to post the tasks in order so that it is easier to understand and it is not random and not all over the place. I will also use more ICT apps to make my work look nice and more presentable and not rely on typing directly onto the blog. To do this I will go back to some blogs and put them on ICT apps.

Blogging Health Check 1

I feel like I am not doing very well as I have a lot of catching up to do but I think that within a few days I will have caught up and be back on track and be doing well. I also feel like the tasks I have done I have done well.

TASK 26B: Final group idea for film opening

individual evaluation of 6 minute idea

It was very easy to come up with  our idea  because the location we picked out was a train station and the object was a backpack , so we decided that our 6minute film idea should be about attempted terrorist attack.

however, to come up with an idea for the title sequence was not easy because we had to think of a shot/ scene that would create suspense and entice the audience , but eventually we decided that the opening shot should be a detective office with  detectives rushing around with evidence, trying to piece the crime together.  i think it was a good idea to have this in our title sequence because the audience would have an idea of whats happening but at the same time they wont,so they would want to know more about the plot and carry on watching the film.

i think our idea was successful because  we managed to come up with title sequence that would potentially entice to audience and we were able to plan out our ideas on a story board (a visual representation). so,  we decided what each shot should include and how it could be effective .

6 Minute Individual Blog Post

It was quite easy to get our ideas because our location (A tube escalator on the Victoria line) and our object (a backpack) fit easily to make a good storyline. It was a bit more difficult to decide how to open our title sequence because although we had a generic order to follow and we had decided our film genre (thriller) we still had to decide what we wanted to portray at the beginning of our film to make our viewers captivated. We also had to try and incorporate the title Speedball that we got from a random generator. I feel like our idea was very successful because if we wanted to we could carry on and make a full film because our story made sense and would make a very interesting film in my opinion.

6 minute challenge - individual reflection on ideas

How easy was it to come up with an idea?
It was quite easy to come up with an idea because with the location of the tube escalator and the prop of a backpack, as a group we instantly thought of the idea of a terrorist attack for a thriller film. We also had another idea for Teen Drama film, but we thought the thriller would entice the audience more.

the location and prop

How easy was it to decide how to open a film with a title sequence?
It was easy as we all watched thriller films so we knew what was typical.  We also knew what would create suspense. However we did struggle towards the end as we did not know what others shots to do to entice the audience. As the opening is a short, we wanted to engage the audience as quick as possible so that they were more eager and interested to watch even more which is why we had shots like the close up of the actor's eye to create tension.

How successful do you think you idea was?
I think our idea was successful because the title sequence would engage the audience through the use of different shot types that we were able to plan using storyboard which helped us visualise how the film would open. It was also successful because it fit in the thriller genre.

6 minute challenge - reflection on ideas

Coming up with ideas for a film with the rest of my group was fairly easy. This was because we all put our minds together to come up with creative ideas with suited the location and title we were given. We thought of props and actions that had a connection to the title 'Speed Ball', such as a baseball player/bat. Our ideas were smart and original so coming up with these ideas were not a problem as they quickly came into our minds.

In terms of how we decided how to open the film, we went more into depth with what types of shots we were going to take at the most appropriate stages of the film opening. We decided to submerge the whole plot/point of the film. This is because we thought it would keep the audience focused and pay more attention to the small details that later would become relevant in the film. It was easy to decide how to conduct the film opening.

Overall, we thought our film idea was very successful as we put all the ideas together quickly, and all the ideas were smart and creative.

This gave us insight on how, in order to come up with good film ideas you must have an open mind and expand on your creative ideas. Also, this exercise gave the impression that team work is very essential in producing a good film as all the ideas we contribute can be adapted onto our film to make it even better.

GENRE

the most successful genres at the UK box office are animation, action and comedy whereas the least popular are war, documentary and romance. furthermore, in 2013-14 153 comedy films were released , this shows that comedies are easier to make and that they are one the most popular genres .
in addition, 33 animated films  and 47 action films were made ,this is mainly due to the fact that the film creators have to use hi tech equipment which results in  it being more expensive . this information shows us that  animations are more popular because people find them more enjoyable.

AUDIENCE

15-24 year olds have been to the cinema the most this year, to watch a variety of films but  pitch perfect was the most successful comedy film with this age group . however,   the lady in the van  which is a comedy , was the most popular film amongst those over the age of 50. also,   many people within the age group 25-34 watched the unchained, fast and furious  and the rush , which made  them the most popular films watched by 24-34 year olds.

men preferred the genres: action and thriller whereas the most popular genres amongst women were  drama , comedy and fantasy.

big hero 6, home and minions were most popular with  the 7-14 age group, this  shows us that this age group prefers to watch animations because they find these films interesting and funny. many animations  such as frozen , jack the giant slayer and the croods, were popular with the 35-44 age group because they have children who wanted to watch these films.

many of lower middle class audience enjoyed watching gravity which is a sci-fi whereas oz the great and powerful, despicable me  were popular amongst the upper middle class audience.

popular films in Scotland were different to the popular films in London because in Scotland , people preferred seeing home grown characters on the big screen because they though  it is  more realistic and relatable.
